National Honor Society

The time has come for this year’s applications for the Eads NHS.

Started in 1921, the National Honor Society, or NHS, is an organization whose intent is to recognize middle and high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

National Honor Society groups are commonly active in community service activities both in the community and at the school. In addition, our NHS chapter elects officers, who, under the supervision of the chapter advisor, coordinate and manage the chapter as a student organization. Students participating in National Honor Society are asked to display the four pillars of National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Who can apply? Anyone who has completed 3 or more high school semesters. If you are already in NHS and will be back next year, you need to re-submit the checklist only. Current seniors in NHS need not re-apply, but other seniors are welcome to.

What are the qualifications? The first cutoff is with your grade point average, or GPA. The national requirement for all NHS clubs is a minimum of 3.00 based on the scale of 4=A, 3=B, 2=C and so on.

What do you need to do? Two things: (1) Fill out the club/activities check sheet (available in room 108). Also, (2) write a letter to the selection committee stating why you should be honored by being picked for this club. Refer to the “pillars” listed above, as this is much more than just another Honor Roll for good grades.

Then what? Turn these two documents into the NHS advisor, Mr. Hallman. The due date for these to be turned in is by the end of school Thursday February 15th. That gives you almost two weeks to get it all done.

Then when do I hear something?
Once the deadline has passed, a committee of all your teachers will evaluate your checklist and letter, and score you with 10 points in each of the pillar areas (for a total of 40 points). All teacher scores are then averaged together to create a composite score. In order to be accepted into NHS, your score must represent 80% or better (score 32 or higher).

Will I learn of my score? Whether accepted or not, all applicants will receive notice of their scores by mail.

When do I get in if accepted? Everyone will attend an Induction Ceremony on Monday March 2nd 2009 at 6:30 pm. This short ceremony is very important and allows all the proud parents to see you receive this honor.

Please get your application in! It is quite an honor to be chosen to represent your school in the NHS.
